hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, hospice, and home health
care. Most people do not pay a Part A premium because they
paid Medicare taxes while working. If you are not eligible for
premium-free Part A, you may be able to buy Part A if you
meet certain conditions.
●
Part B is medical insurance that helps cover services, such as
doctors’ services, outpatient care, durable medical equipment,
home health services, and other medical services as well as some
preventive services. For Part B, you pay a monthly premium.
●
Part D is prescription drug coverage that helps cover the costs of certain
medications doctors prescribe for treatment. Enrolling in a Medicare Part
D plan is voluntary, and you pay an additional monthly premium for this
coverage.
Permanent residents can get Medicare Part A, Part B, and Part D if they meet
certain conditions. Permanent residents who are 65 years old or older are
automatically enrolled in Medicare Part A when they start getting Social
Security retirement benefits. If you are not 65 but are eligible for other
reasons, call the Social Security office near you for information about
enrolling. Generally, you must have worked in the United States for 10 years
(or 40 quarters) over the course of your life to receive these Part A Medicare
benefits without paying a premium. For more information about Medicare
and to download Medicare & You—the official U.S. government Medicare
handbook—visit www.medicare.gov. Information is also available in Spanish.
Medicaid: Medicaid is a joint federal-state program for low-income residents.
Each state has its own Medicaid guidelines. Medicaid pays for certain medical
services, such as visits to the doctor, prescription drugs, and hospitalization.
Permanent residents who entered the United States before August 22, 1996,
may be able to receive Medicaid if they meet certain conditions. Most
