Dear Parents,
Assembly Item
The students in rooms 3.1 and 3.2 year 2 presented their item at the assembly on Friday. They
shared an overview of the amazing work they have been doing with our ‘Talk for Writing’ program.
This year we are introducing Talk for Writing as a whole school approach to the teaching of writing.
This evidence-based program uses spoken activities to develop writing skills. Quality writing is
created by first expanding and developing students’ oral language skills and then teaching the
necessary steps for higher level sentence, paragraph and text construction. Talk for Writing has the
potential to dramatically improve students’ writing. The approach also offers students with learning
and language difficulties an opportunity to develop stronger writing skills. Students find Talk for
Writing fun, engaging and motivating. We are really looking forward to the expected positive
outcomes and student progress as this approach is implemented over the year.
The quality of the oral language and writing that was evident during the assembly presentation was
very high and clearly demonstrated the enjoyment and engagement of the students in both classes.
The item was very entertaining and I am excited to see the progression of the implementation of ‘Talk
for Writing’ across the school.
Summer Carnival
Year 4,5 and 6 students who participated in the Summer carnival on Friday 1
March certainly represented our school with great pride and sportsmanship.
The teams all performed extremely well and we were the overall winners in
three out of the four sports — Machine Pitch, Volleyball and League Tag. This
was an incredible result and I congratulate the staff who coached the teams, as
well as the students who participated.
P&C Fun Friday
Our P&C volunteers continue to increase sales every week for Fun Friday. Thank you to all families
who are supporting this weekly fundraising activity. A recycling drive has commenced for the juice
and flavoured milk boxes that are sold. Student leaders are giving out faction points each Friday
when students return the empty containers. Funds raised from these returned containers will add to
our P&C fundraising efforts.
NAPLAN assessments
Our year 3 and 5 students will be participating in the NAPLAN assessments for literacy and
numeracy, starting on Wednesday 13 March. I wish them well in this annual assessment program,
that is completed nationally in years 3, 5, 7 and 9.
Kind regards
RUSSELL NEWBOUND
