INSTALLING POLITICAL SIGNS? BE SURE TO CALL 811 FIRST!!
During these days leading up to the elections the Arizona Corporation
Commission (ACC) Safety Division would like to take this opportunity to remind
everyone of the importance of following the requirements of the Arizona Underground
Facilities Law commonly known as Blue Stake. In accordance with the law everyone
who is going to be excavating within the state of Arizona must notify the one-call center
(Arizona Blue Stake) at least two full working days prior to conducting any excavation
activities including driving stakes into the ground to display political signs. By state
definition; Excavation includes anytime a person is driving stakes and or post into the
ground or digging holes (even with hand tools) to install posts for a sign.
Although utilities are typically buried at specific depths when originally installed,
many factors may have impacted their current depths such as road grading and landscape
activities over the years. Often times a buried line that may have been originally installed
12 or more inches below ground may now be just below the surface.
It would be tragic to have someone injured or possibly killed while exercising
their political rights because they failed to follow the Arizona Blue Stake law. Please,
before conducting any excavations, plan ahead and call the Arizona Blue Stake Center by
simply dialing “811” from any phone. It’s easy, it will help you stay safe and it’s
FREE.
